Legacy Week is held from the last Sunday in August to the first Saturday in September each year. It is an opportunity for Australians to recognise the sacrifices made not only by veterans, but also by the partners, children and loved ones who stand beside them.
Legacy has been supporting the families of veterans since 1923. They can provide social, financial and developmental support to partners and children of veterans, helping families navigate grief, hardship, changes in circumstances and the ongoing impacts of service-related injury and illness. Through practical assistance, advocacy, wellbeing programs, social connection opportunities and educational support, Legacy helps thousands of Australian families each year.
The timing of Legacy Week, in the lead up to Legacy Day and Father's Day, carries special significance. While many Australians celebrate Father's Day with family, Legacy Week serves as a reminder of the children who have grown up without a parent because of military service and the families who continue to live with the impacts of that loss.
There are many ways to get involved during Legacy Week. The most recognisable is purchasing a Legacy badge or bear — a long-standing symbol of support for families of veterans. Funds raised during Legacy Week directly support programs and services that help families through some of life's most challenging circumstances.
