The launch of the Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency on 1 July is an important step forward in how support is delivered to veterans and families of veterans.

The term ‘initial operations’ means the Agency has started with a strong foundation of services in place from 1 July 2026. Support will continue to build and expand over time.

This approach means support can begin sooner, and that future improvements will be shaped by what works best for veterans and families of veterans.

In its early stages, the Agency will focus on veterans and families who may need extra support as they transition from service. This reflects the Royal Commission’s recommendation to provide support early, recognising that the first 12 months after service can play an important role in long-term wellbeing. This will include on-base support through Veteran and Family Support Officers.

All veterans and families can also access support through the Agency’s website and phone line to find information and connect with help when they need it.

As the Agency grows, it will learn from early delivery, feedback and real experiences. This means the way services are offered will continue to evolve, with a focus on improving wellbeing outcomes and making support easier to access and navigate.

A key part of this will be the establishment of a Lived Experience Advisory Group. Veterans, families of veterans, and those who support them will be invited to apply to join the group. Members will provide independent advice to the Agency’s Chief Executive Officer, sharing their knowledge, skills and lived experience to help shape policies, programs and services. More information about how to apply will be available following the commencement of the inaugural Chief Executive in late July.

The Agency will work closely with stakeholders such as state and territory governments, Hubs, and ex-service organisations. Strong partnerships will be essential to building a more connected system of support over time.

At its core, the Agency is focused on making support easier to access and navigate, including by helping veterans and families connect with local services.

The Agency is not intended to replace the support you may already receive through service providers or organisations, but to make it easier to navigate and access the support that is available.
