Veteran and Family Support Officers

During your ADF career you may incur injury or illness that has an immediate or future impact on the wellbeing of you and your family.

Speaking with a Veteran and Family Support Officer (VFSO) can help as we provide practical support according to your individual need. VFSOs can also connect you with a variety of relevant services and supports that may be available to you and your family.

How do I know when I should speak with a VFSO?

A VFSO may be able to help if you are currently serving and have been:

  • injured or become unwell as a result of service
  • medically downgraded at any time
  • deployed at any time
  • returned home early from an exercise or deployment due to injury or illness.

A VFSO can:

  • show you how to use MyService and other online tools
  • explain how to submit a claim for service-related injury
  • answer any questions you may have about the services and supports available to you and your family.

How to get in touch

VFSOs are on over 60 Defence bases across Australia. To arrange an appointment near you, please complete the form below.

What happens next?

After we receive your request, a VFSO will reach out to make an appointment.
You can ask for an appointment on base or we can speak with you on the phone.

Once your appointment is booked, we will send you a consent form and request that you sign prior to your appointment. Having your consent gives us permission to speak with relevant Defence contacts to ensure communication and supports are coordinated and streamlined.

While you and your family are still serving, your care and treatment primarily remains the responsibility of Defence. However, if the opportunity for referral to additional supports for you or your family are identified during a VFSO appointment, we will discuss this with you and offer to help connect you to those supports.
